Frequently Asked Questions

Is AODA training mandatory in Ontario?

Yes. In 2005, the Ontario Public Service passed the AODA, making the training a requirement for all employers and workers across Ontario. This mandatory training applies to all government, private, not-for-profit sectors, and public sector organizations.

Additionally, the Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discriminatory actions against all people, including those with disabilities. The AODA training can help Ontarians better understand both physical and mental disabilities so they can better follow the code and confidently interact with those living with a disability.

Does AODA certification expire?

This AODA training certification is valid for three years from the issue date.

Who is exempt from AODA?

The only people exempt from AODA training are those who are self-employed and have no employees. All other workers, including contractors, part-time, and seasonal workers, are required to comply with the AODA.

Do you need AODA training if you start a new position at work?

Those with AODA training on their resume may stand out against other applicants. However, if you don't have AODA training, you will be required to get it shortly after starting a new position. Workplaces must provide AODA-accessible customer service training.

What are the AODA requirements?

To pass the course, participants must understand the following AODA training requirements:

  • What AODA means
  • The work responsibilities for interacting with and supporting customers with disabilities
  • What the Ontario Human Rights Code is (related to accessibility)
  • How to develop accessibility policies, including enforcing accessibility standards in the workplace
